ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
Researching the History of Women in the Gulf

Paper Proposal Text :
One of the biggest challenges in researching the history of women in the Gulf is the lack of literature; both primary and secondary sources are lacking for this part of the world. Yet this is a seminal area for our understanding of women in Islam and due to the lack of historical resources, scholars have depended largely on theological literature and material dating from the Abbasid period representing the Islamic empire much more than the heartland. The lack of modern research on the Gulf has mad the image sketched by medieval sources somewhat permanent in the approach to women in the Gulf. Researching the Gulf with an interest in studying lived realities of its women in the past and present rather than dependence on discourses about their lives, as well as using resources less familiar to historians, has enabled a groups of researchers to come up with some new material and conclusions about the history of women in the Gulf that contrast sharply with the normative picture.
