ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
CES choices for the GCC’s Power Industry

Paper Proposal Text :
We focus on the Electricity Sector in the GCC countries. Review the state of play and some of the main drivers for the adoption of clean energy solutions: GHG emissions, ecological footprint of electricity generation and water desalination, natural gas shortages, energy security, water security, and the economic opportunity of exported hydrocarbon.

The adoption of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in the GCC countries has been consistently gaining attention, as it’s widely seen as a suitable measure, in a region where heavy industry and geological exploitation have led to wealth and prosperity. Furthermore, making captured CO2 available for Enhance Oil Recovery is expected to create significant economic value. However, CCS solutions are immature, and carry certain risks and inherit weaknesses.

We run a simple comparative study between REN and CCS based electricity generation in the GCC countries in general, and in the UAE and Saudi Arabia with a little more detail; and provide region-specific technical, economic, and strategic assessment tools for governments and policy makers for energy-mix design.
