ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
Corporate governance and bank performance: Islamic vs. non Islamic banks in GCC.

Paper Proposal Text :
Using firm-level data for an exhaustive sample of Islamic and non Islamic banks in the GCC region, during the period 2007 - 2009, this article examines the operating performance and risk taking of the banking sector during the recent financial crisis. The data also allows us to investigate the role played by corporate governance mechanisms, including ownership structure and board of directors’ characteristics on the observed performance. The results show that, during the crisis, Islamic banks indeed outperformed non Islamic banks in the region. The former also exhibit a more conservative risk taking behavior. The findings indicate that government, family and foreign owners, as well as the size and independence of the board, affect banks’ level of performance and risk taking.
