ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
GENDER, DRESS, AND IDENTITY: PHOTOGRAPHY IN KUWAIT

Paper Proposal Text :
This paper will discuss the relationship between gender, identity, and photography. The presentation is the product of 1) three years of experience producing a visual ethnography of Kuwait, which included the editing of hundreds of photos of both male and female Kuwaitis, 2) research on tourism in Kuwait and the effort taken to avoid unwanted photos of hotel guests and mall shoppers, and 3) surveys of young Kuwaitis’ use of photography in social media. The presentation will thus focus on the difference between photographs taken for public consumption and those strictly for personal use, such as selfies and glamour photography. It will briefly explore the consequences of photographs appearing in the wrong sector. Lastly, a survey of photos of national figures (for example, Sheikha Moza) will be presented with an analysis of their portrayal. One of the themes of the paper will be an examination of how dress is a factor in gender representation and identity: that is, how different attire affects the image being projected and the audience being sought. Photos of the topics under discussion will be presented when possible.
