ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
Redrawing the Energy Map After the Arab Spring

Paper Proposal Text :
The political upheavals in the Arab World are re-drawing the energy map of the Middle East and North Africa. The new Libya is expected to reward European nations like France, the U.K. and Italy for supporting the rebellion against Qaddafi by giving them greater access to the nation\'s oil reserves, Africa\'s largest. The weakening or removal of the Syria regime is likely to smoothen up the route of Middle East gas to Turkey and Europe for the same reasons as in Libya. A big question mark hangs over Iran -- how will it react to increased regional and international isolation and sanctions? Is it prepared to deliver on threat to close Hormuz, shoking the world oil supply? Or will it seek a negotiated way out of the crisis that would warrant continued supply of oil to global markets and possibly reopen the access to IOCs to its reserves.
