ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
Excavating Gender Construction & Representation in Contemporary Omani Poetry

Paper Proposal Text :
This paper analyzes the construction and representation of gender in contemporary Omani poetry. In the post-1970s era, Omani poetry has changed significantly due to the effects of the modernization process in the Sultanate. This paper will examine how "femininity" and "masculinity" are constructed in language and image in modern romantic poetry from Oman, and expose how imaginary bodies of desire and difference in Omani poetry challenge both societal and artistic norms. This paper will also consider how different female personages from Europe and the Gulf, such as Karin Boye and Laila Abdulla Fakhru, have been reconfigured in contemporary Omani poetry to address taboo topics related to gender, sexuality, and politics. This paper will also demonstrate how Omani poets have invoked male poets and writers such as Shanfara and Imro al Qais (the father of classical Arabic poetry), Henri Barbusse, al-Hallaj and Omar Khayyam to expand the contours and representations of masculinity in Omani poetry.
