ABSTRACT OF PAPER

Title of Paper:
BRINGING IT BACK HOME; REDEFINING ISLAMIC ART IN SAUDI ARABIA KING ABDULAZIZ CENTER FOR WORLD CULTURE

Paper Proposal Text :
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture is in the process of conceptualizing the inaugural exhibition for its Islamic Civilization Gallery. The focus is to represent the breadth of Islamic civilization history, faith and art- through a display of its rich and diverse artistic heritage. The gallery’s broad objectives, like that of the Center, include nurturing a passion for lifelong learning, facilitating creativity, knowledge sharing and fostering cross cultural and generational awareness. More specifically it aims to present Islamic history together with its material culture -which is not included in the Saudi educational curriculum- thus providing a unique experience for the public. Creating a new Islamic art gallery allows for a moment of reflection, a pause to reassess whether current conventional approaches in the research, methodology, and presentation of Islamic art are appropriate in the Saudi Arabian context. In an attempt to answer these questions, focused audience research survey was carried out. The survey represented an accurate cross section of Saudi society, and revealed a diverse range of nuanced responses that proved crucial in the formulation of aims and objectives for the gallery. This paper presents the research findings and how they have contributed to the Islamic Civilization Gallery's definition of Islamic art, and provided a glimpse of Saudi Arabia’s vision of itself and its relation and impact on the rest of the world both in the past and present
