Abstract
This paper compares the findings of two surveys on three GCC countries respondents’ perceptions of new media, 2009 and 2013. It provides a view of how Arab Gulf countries use the Internet via social media and how they feel about its improvement over time. The first survey was conducted in 2009 and found that the Internet emerged as the most widely reported news source as it was highly chosen by Qatari and Bahraini respondents, while pan-Arab TV news services including Al Jazeera TV and Al Arabiya TV finished second. The second survey data – originally was conducted by Northwestern University in Qatar – confirmed that the Internet emerges as the main source of information in Bahrain. 9 in 10 internet users indicated they visited social networking sites on a daily basis, with averaging 120 to 240 minutes per day. Facebook is ubiquitous throughout the region, used by over 94%, while Twitter is used by 51% of respondents. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the future of Internet as a news services in this region.
